Alice Adelia Martin

Alice Adelia Martin, along with her twin Eleanor Amelia Martin, was born 11 May 1849 in Winslow, Stephenson County, IL to parents Nathaniel Martin and Hannah Strader. Her father had yet to buy into the sawmill enterprise on the Pecatonica River at the site where he would found the village of Martintown, and Alice probably lived out her short life before the family departed Winslow. According to a letter written nearly a hundred years after her death by her surviving sibling Julia Beard Martin Savage, her name was derived from a children’s story or nursery rhyme her mother had enjoyed that concerned a pair of twin girls named Eleanor Amelia and Alice Adelia.

Alice died 4 October 1849 at less than five months of age. Her burial site was probably in Winslow -- she is the only one of the eleven children who died during Hannah Strader Martin’s lifetime whose remains were not placed in the Martin cemetery, as that graveyard did not yet exist when Alice passed away.
