William Nathan Spece

William Nathan Spece, second of the three children of Cora Belle Warner and Alfonso James Spece and the only son, was born 15 February 1902 in Martintown, Green County, WI, a village founded by his great-grandfather Nathaniel Martin. William was undoubtedly named for his great-grandfather, Green County pioneer William S. Spece, and for his great-grandfather Nathaniel, who was often known as Nathan.

William developed whooping cough at the age of only twelve days. He wrestled with the condition for nearly two weeks, but then succumbed 12 March 1902. His time on Earth was so brief he was inadvertently left off of some of the genealogical lists composed by extended family members during the mid-20th Century. His remains were interred at Saucerman Cemetery, also known as Cadiz Cemetery. This cemetery, to the north of Martintown, contains graves of many family extended members; however, William was alone among his immediate family in being laid to rest there. His parents and sisters would go on to relocate to Fresno County, CA in 1909 and they would spend their remaining decades out West. When their turns came, they were buried in graves far from that of little William.
